Heart Attack which in one time used to be the problem or disease for the elderlies has now become common in young population in India. In recent past there have been cases where lot of known youngsters suffered heart attack in India. Heart Attack in medical language is called Myocardial Infarction. In simple language if we say heart attack happens when one or more part of your heart muscles does not get oxygen supply. Oxygen in the body is supplied by blood through arteries so when there is blockage in the artery supplying blood to the heart then the oxygen supply also gets obstructed leading to heart attack. In India Kerala and Punjab have the highest incedence of heart disease. In Punjab it is mainly attributed to the eating habits and lifestyle of the people living in Punjab.
Heart attack is an emergency and needs immediate attention. Most of the cases that end up in emergency waste the golden hour. The most common cause is that many a time heart attack is taken as gastric pain. As per cardiologist, Dr Sandeep Parekh at Arogya Heart Centre and Shalby Hospital, Mohali, Punjab,"It is very important to understand that it is better to be safe than sorry. If you feel pain in the chest then it is best to go to a heart specialist and atleast get an ECG test done. ECG test is the basic test that will rule out heart attack or confirm heart attack."
If a pateint has suffered heart attack then the first thing is to reach and consult a cardiologist or heart specialist. Following are the common symptoms of heart attack:
Chest pain that lasts for more than few minutes
Pain radiating to shoulder, jaw, neck and arms
Shortness of breath
Dizziness or fainting
Rapid pulse
IIn case our heart specialist diagnoses the chest pain as heart attack then he will immediately stablize the patient and plan for a cath angiography which is done to check the amount of blockage in a heart artery. In case the heart artery is blocked more than 60% then that needs to be opened.
Angioplasty or in medical language Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA) or in simple language heart artery stenting is the procedure to place a stent in the blocked artery to open the blockage and resume the blood flow to the heart. In angioplasty our cardiologist and heart specialist will insert a guidewire through the radial artery (wrist). This wire will reach the coronary arteries and a balloon might be used to dilate the blocked artery. A drug eluting stent (DES) or a metallic stent is placed inside the artery at the point of blockage. The procedure is completed in 15-20 minutes and the patient goes home in 2-3 days time.
For understanding the cost of angioplasty in major cities of India like Gurgaon, Delhi, Mohali we need to understand the procedure. In most of the cases angioplasty or heart artery stenting is done along with angiography. After the angiography is done cardiologist will discuss with the attendant the report of angiography and explain if there is a need of angioplasty. Depending upon the report of angiography it is decided how many stents whould be needed or how many blockages are there. The cost of angiography at Shalby Hospital, Mohali, Punjab under Dr Sandeep Parekh is INR 15,000 and that of angioplasty with single drug eluting stent is INR 1.50 Lacs with 2-3 days stay in hospital. The same cost in Gurgaon would be INR 18,000 for angiography and approximately INR 1.75 for single stent angioplasty with Drug Elluting Stent.
