Gall Bladder is a very important organ in our digestive system. It is located just below the Liver in the right upper part of your abdomen just below the ribcage. Gall Bladder stores Bile Juice which is used in breaking of fat in your diet. Whenever you eat some drops of bile juice gets mixed into the food which helps in digesting the fat in your food. Sometimes the Bile Juice in the Gall Bladder starts developing stones which grow in size and number. If the stones in the gall bladder become bigger in size then they cannot come out of the narrow opening of the gall bladder adn remain stuck inside the gall bladder. Stones in the gall bladder normally do not cause much of a problem but in some patients there is a vomitting sensation most of the time. Sometimes the gall stones can cause severe pain in the abdomen and vomitting requiring hospitalization. Gall stones are quite easily diagnosed on a simple ultrasound examination which should be done when the patient is in overnight fasting. If the patient has eaten anything then the gall bladder contracts and stones will not be seen on the ultrasound. Stones which are smaller than 1 cm can come out of the gall bladder alongwith the bile juice and may not require any treatment. However stones which are biggeer in size can cause damage to the gall bladder and cause cancer which can spread to other nearby organs like Liver.
The best treatment for gall stones is surgical removal of the gall bladder. This surgery can be done through a small incision in the abdomen or through 3 small holes using a Laparoscope. One of the most common surgery which is done by General Surgeons is the removal of the Gall Bladder. Removal of Gall Bladder through a Laparoscope is called Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, which is a fairly common surgery and carries only a small risk of complications. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is most commonly performed by inserting a tiny video camera and special surgical tools through three small incisions to see inside your abdomen and remove the gallbladder. In cases where the gall bladder is stuck to the nearby organs called adhesiolysis, laparoscopic surgery may not be possible and the surgeon might have to resort to an open surgery. After Gall Bladder Removal the patient is advised to eat lesser quantity of food in each meal but take more frequent meals. This kind of lifestyle is advisable for all the people in order to prevent diseases like Diabetes and Heart Disease and therefore there are no harmful effects on the body due to the removal of gall bladder. Infact removal of gall bladder results in more balanced eating which also helps in reducing weight for people who have been otherwise struggling to lose body weight.
