Pilonidal Sinus Surgery
A pilonidal sinus is a depression in the skin or small pit that occurs at the bottom of the tailbone (coccyx) and can become infected and filled with pus. Once infected, the technical term is pilonidal abscess. Pilonidal abscesses look like a boil at the bottom of the tailbone, just above the crack of the buttocks. It is more common in men than in women. Its important to keep the area as clean and dry as possible. Removing hair from the area is also advisable, best is by shaving or using hair removal creams. This should reduce the risk of an infection. If your pilonidal sinus does become infected, surgery is likely to be recommended.
Conventionly Pilonidal Sinus Surgery is being done by Plastic Surgeons or General Surgeons as Flap Surgery. This type of surgery has a very long recovery period. The patient has to lie on stomach for 20-30 days after the surgery. Several times the patient has to come to the hospital for dressing. The technique developed by Dr Suresh is called `Wet to Dry Technique for Pilonidal Sinus Surgery'. In this surgery the recovery time reduces to just 2 days from 60 days. The patient has no discomfort or pain in the post operative period. The hospital stay is just one day and only one dressing is required after discharge from the hospital. There are two small cuts made, one at the upper end and the other at the lower end where hair go in. Both ends are throughly cleaned and hair and the debris removed.
Pilonidal Surgery In Axilla
This is another case of pilonidal surgery being done by Dr. Suresh V Sharma. Dr Suresh has tremendous expertise in doing Pilonidal Surgery. In above picture you can see surgery being done for pilonidal sinus in the underarm area. No big incision is required. It's a relatively minor operation, so you should be able to return home either the same day or the day after the procedure.
After the operation, a dressing is applied to help the wound heal. The advantage of this treatment is you don't need any dressings and there is little pain. You will probably be able to return to normal activities within a day or two. The risk of infection is similar to excision and primary closure. However this procedure is relatively new and may not be available in your local area.
Dr Suresh carefully gives the incision at a place avoiding the midline of the buttocks.
You will rarely feel any discomfort after your operation. You will usually be discharged the next day after the surgery.
You can start to exercise and play sport as soon as you feel able to. However, if you have stitches, you may need to avoid activities that could disrupt the stitches for 3-4 days.
