A large number of patients in India walk into the doctor's chamber and when inquired about their obesity they would say - `I have thyroid' which is the most laughable thing in this world. Every person has thyroid gland which keeps your body warm and makes you do the physical work. Without thyroid there would be no life. Actually what these people mean is that they have hypothyroidism - a condition in which the thyroid gland functions less and produces lower levels of thyroxine. Thyroxine is the hormone responsible for warming up of your muscles before they start burning sugar. Lower levels of thyroixne means that you would feel lethargic at all times and this would result in obesity.
Such patients would go to a doctor and their thyroid levels are checked. If TSH level is slightly raised and T3 / T4 levels are on the lower side, these patients are immediately put on Thyroxine medicine which makes your thyroid gland even more slack and it starts producing even lesser quantities of the much needed thyroxine. The medicine goes on increasing and wihtin few years your thyroid gland stops functioning completely and now you are completely dependent on the medicine.
In our interaction with the patients we have realized that very few patients understand the thyroid gland and its functioning because none of their doctors had the time or the need to explain this in detail. The thyroid test which you undergo so frequently gives you three values of TSH, T3 and T4 which respectively stand for Thyroid Stimulating Hormone, Tri-iodo thyronine and Thyroxine. As the name suggests Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) is not produced by your thyroid gland but it is produced by the hypothalamus in the brain and its job is to activate the thyroid gland so that it starts producing T3 and T4. Higher levels of TSH should not be the reason for putting you on Thyroid Medicine which is the case in more than 98% patients as long as the T3 and T4 levels are within normal range which is the case with most of the patients.
If you exercise for 5 minutes in the morning then your muscles will be warmed up and the function of Thyroid gland gets bypassed and you would not have an excuse of having less active thyroid gland for your obesity.
However in certain cases there is need for the surgery for thyroid. These cases can be that of benign thyroid growth or at times it could be thyroid cancer. The surgery is called thyroidectomy. The most common reason for the thryroid surgery or thyroidectomy is cancer. Another reason for which thyroidectomy is done in India is a large goiter. A large goiter may be uncomfortable or make it hard to breathe or swallow. A goiter may also be removed if it's causing your thyroid to be overactive.
Another reason that the thyroid surgery is performed in Gurgaon, India is if there are suspicious thyroid nodules. Some thyroid nodules can't be identified as cancerous or noncancerous after testing a sample from a needle biopsy. If your nodules are at increased risk of being cancerous, you may be a candidate for thyroidectomy or thyroid surgery. Dr S P Bhanot is one of the best surgeons for thyrpid surgery or thyrpidectomy in Gurgaon, India.
